Pai Gow Pair Rankings

Combinations of tiles in pai gow determine the winner. Listed below are the possible pairs and their order by rank:

The Supreme Pair

The highest pair a player can have is the “gee joon” or "supreme pair." This is made up of the 4-2 and 2-1 tiles. The 4-2 and 2-1 are the only "wild cards" in the woodpile. These wild cards cannot be substituted for just any tile from the woodpile; they may be played as either a three or a six when making pairs.

Bo – The Second Highest Pairs

The second highest pairs are those pairs known as the "Bo," which are made up of matched or unmatched tiles that have the same totals. Their rank from high to low is:

6-6 and 6-6, a pair known as "Heaven"
1-1 and 1-1, a pair known as "Earth"
4-4 and 4-4, a pair known as "Man"
3-1 and 3-1, a pair known as "Goose"
5-5 and 5-5, a pair known as "Flower"
3-3 and 3-3, a pair known as "Long"
2-2 and 2-2, a pair known as "Board"
6-5 and 6-5, a pair known as "Hatchet"
6-4 and 6-4, a pair known as "Partition"
6-1 and 6-1, a pair known as "Long Leg Seven"
5-1 and 5-1, a pair known as "Big Head Six"
6-3 and 5-4, mixed nine, a pair known as "jaap gow"
6-2 and 5-3, mixed eight, a pair known as "jaap bart"
5-2 and 4-3, mixed seven, a pair known as "jaap chut"
4-1 and 3-2, mixed five, a pair known as "jaap ng"

Wongs – The Third Level

The level beneath the Bo is called "Wongs." The Wong is a nine paired with a double six or double one. The double-six combinations are higher than the double-one groupings.

Gongs – The Fourth Level

The level of hands below the Wongs is the "Gongs." Gongs are an eight paired with a double six or double one. The double-six combinations are higher than the double-one combinations.

Other Hands

If a player does not have any of these hands, then all the values on the two tiles are added together.
